  • EEK! Just a heads up! I used to work at Firehouse subs and the veggies are cooked in au jus gravy sauce!!!!!! DO NOT order the veggie sub if you are vegan or vegetarian!!!!!!!!
Say “I’ll have the veggie sub without sauteed veggies and without cheese!” Then you can ask them to add whatever condiments, and fresh veggies you like!

Hi CharlotteG. Thank you for your comment. I confirmed with Firehouse Subs that the mushrooms are cooked in an au jus that has traces of anchovies. I’ve updated the Firehouse Subs listing to reflect this.

The sauteed onions and bell peppers are also done in an au jus that has beef. The mushrooms are cooked offsite and sent to us in the au jus with fish, while the onions and peppers are sliced and cooked onsite in the au jus without fish.

I have a contact at the company that makes an au jus for Firehouse, I think the one for the veggies not the one with the mushrooms because it definitely has no fish. It comes in big white packets. Even though it’s called au jus, she said the ingredients that give it the beef flavor do not come from any meat or beef. They are flavorings made with vegetable proteins. I think vegetarian and vegan folks can safely order the peppers and onions based on that.

I work there and the wheat bread has honey in it and the white bread contains l-cysteine. The au jus for the onions and peppers are vegan friendly (beef flavoring).
